#45 Can High Cholesterol on Keto Be Healthy with Dave Feldman

April 16, 2018

"I ate over 450 grams of fat and I watched my cholesterol levels DROP!"... Not something you'd expect to hear someone say, not to mention actually happen in a healthy body.

For decades we've been told that saturated fat and cholesterol are dangerous for you, causing heart disease, clogging the arteries, and making you diabetic. However, new research over the past few years has disputed this notion as we gradually improve our understanding of cholesterol.

In fact, people with higher levels of cholesterol have a lower risk of heart disease, whereas people with lower cholesterol have increased mortality rates. How crazy is that?

People who go on a low carb high fat diet tend to see an increase in cholesterol as well, in both the LDL (the "bad") and HDL (the "good"). However, their triglyceride levels tend to drop, which prevents them from becoming diseased.

That's the topic of today's Body Mind Empowerment Podcast with Siim Land. Our guest is Dave Feldman who's an engineer, a citizen scientist, and a low carb advocate. His research on cholesterol in ketogenic diets has revealed a lot of insight into the functioning of this essential nutrient that even professional medical practitioners are beginning to implement.

Topics Discussed:

  • What is the Role of Cholesterol - 04:18
  • Does Cholesterol Clog Your Arteries - 08:17
  • Difference Between LDL and HDL Cholesterol - 11:50
  • What Is Remnant Cholesterol - 15:02
  • Why Your Cholesterol Can Go Up on a Ketogenic Diet - 20:00
  • What is the Feldman Protocol - 25:08
  • Are You a Lean Mass Hyper Responder - 46:20
  • Why Doctors Are Afraid of Cholesterol Still - 57:00

#42 All About the Mitochondria, Aging, Disease, and Energy with Dr. Lee Know

April 3, 2018

"All that surrounds us is the foundation of life, the birthplace of what your science calls midi-chlorians, the foundation of what connects the Living Force and the Cosmic Force."― Grandmaster Yoda, Star Wars

What are these midi-chlorians? Well, they're your good-ol' mitochondria the powerhouse of the cells that you learned about in biology class.

"Midi-chlorians are a microscopic life form that resides within all living cells. Without the midi-chlorians, life could not exist, and we would have no knowledge of the Force. They continually speak to us, telling us the will of the Force. When you learn to quiet your mind, you'll hear them speaking to you."Qui-Gon Jinn, to Anakin Skywalker

#39 Dangers of Blue Light Exposure and Chronic Sleep Deprivation at the Biohacker’s Live Show

March 22, 2018

Did you know that even just a few nights of poor sleep gives you the blood sugar levels of a diabetic?

Getting less than ideal amounts of sleep decreases your alertness, memory, intelligence, and mood...

The craziest thing about it is that you'll get used to sleep deprivation and after a while, you think that your cognitive haze and sleepiness are normal, whereas your brain is simply compensating for lack of sleep

When it comes to health and wellness, then sleep is the most important thing. Your brain literally heals itself only during deep sleep and most diseases of modern life can get traced back to poor sleep patterns

That's the topic of today's Body Mind Empowerment Podcast. I'm your host Siim Land but this episode isn't actually going to be on the Body Mind Empowerment Podcast. Instead, I hopped onto the Biohacker's Live Show hosted by my friends from the Biohacker's Center in Finland. We're going to be doing weekly live streams on their YouTube and Facebook page where we talk with interesting people in the field of biohacking, human optimization, and overall awesomeness.

In this episode, I made a short video about the dangers of blue light exposure at night and hopped onto the live stream for a few minutes in the end because I had other stuff to do. In future episodes, you can expect me to stay on for the full time.

This show is hosted by Teemu Arina and Olli Sovijärvi who are talking to Daniel Pardi. Dan is the CEO of Human.OS and he's a sleep expert and human optimizer.

Topics discussed:

  • Why sleep is the foundation to health and wellness
  • What are the biggest sleep-related issues Olli sees in his patients
  • What different sleep patterns do hunter-gatherer societies have
  • What are chronotypes and how does it affect your sleep
  • What are circadian rhythms and how to avoid a circadian mismatch
  • Dangers of blue light exposure at night
  • How to protect yourself against poor sleep and artificial light sources

#38 How to Increase Serotonin and Dopamine Levels (Of Lobsters and Men VOL 2)

March 19, 2018

Are you a sad lobster?!?

Let me explain...

In the previous episode, we talked about one of the most fundamental principles of your embodied experience of reality. Namely, that the way you hold your posture and in what physiological state you’re in has a profound impact on your psychological state of mind and vice versa.

Jordan Peterson wrote in his book The 12 Rules of Life: An Antidote to Chaos how male lobsters engage in brutal dominance fights between each other.

Winning once is going to predict the future successes of a lobster because of experiencing a boost in the neurotransmitter serotonin

Serotonin plays an important role in decision making, cognitive performance, risk-seeking behavior, and social affiliations. Low serotonin will lead to low serotonin-producing behavior and depression.

Therefore, if you ever want to get yourself back on the right track of health, wealth, love, and happiness, you need to know how to manage and optimize your neurotransmitters even after having suffered from detrimental defeat.

That's what we'll discuss in today's Body Mind Empowerment Podcast with Siim Land, some lobsters, and your brain's neurochemistry.

Topics Discussed:

  • Identifying syndromes of being a sad lobster
  • How to know if you're depressed and serotonin deficient
  • Why dopamine has become the bad-boy of your brain chemistry
  • The basis for emotional addiction and apathy
  • What causes low serotonin and dopamine
  • How to get back to baseline and out of depression
  • What activities and foods boost serotonin
  • How to reignite your joy for life and happiness
  • What supplements to take for balancing your neurotransmitters

And much more...

#37 RULE NUMBER 1: Stand Up Straight With Your Shoulders Back (Of Lobsters and Men VOL 1)

March 18, 2018

What’s the most fundamental rule you should adopt in life?

Here it is: Rule Number 1 Stand up straight with your shoulders back.

It may sound comical and innocent but it actually has a profound impact on your overall experience of reality.
This is not some self-help positive thinking bullsh#t but it’s programmed into your physiology and psyche.

Jordan Peterson who’s a Canadian clinical psychologist at the University of Toronto talks about this in his latest book The 12 Rules of Life: An Antidote to Chaos

Rule Number 1 Stand Up Straight With Your Shoulders Back is a meditation on the habits and dominance hierarchies of lobsters that can apply to humans as well.

That's the topic of today's Body Mind Empowerment Podcast. I'm Siim Land and our guest is the human psyche...and some lobsters...

Topics discussed:

  • How the dominance hierarchy of lobsters reflects in the nervous system of humans
  • Why you never want to be a sad losing lobster
  • What happens if you give antidepressants to a depressed lobster
  • How to improve your neurochemical state of mind
  • What's so profound about standing in a confident position

#36 Optimizing Neurotransmitters and Your Emotional Bandwidth for Better Decision Making with Ryan Munsey

March 11, 2018

95% of your decision making is based on how you feel at any given moment

That's what the neuroscientist Antonio Damasio claims about human reasoning

When you spend a bit of time thinking about it, then you can see that this is indeed so in the majority of cases. People tend to overeat when they're tired or emotionally stressed out. They do their work only when they're motivated and they rationalize everything with their gut feeling

Don't get this the wrong way - success and mastery require you to show up day in and day out no matter how you feel...but you wouldn't want to live in such a state for too long

So, making better decisions should crucially begin with optimizing how you feel and what emotions you're feeling as to make it easier for yourself.

That's the topic of today's Body Mind Empowerment Podcast. I'm your host Siim Land and our guest is Ryan Munsey from The Better Human Project. He’s a podcaster, an author, speaker and a high-performance coach who helps entrepreneurs, Navy SEALS, and athletes win medals, stay healthy and function at their peak.

We're going to talk about:

  • How Ryan and his co-host travel the States in a van and talk to fascinating people 06:00
  • What message is Ryan trying to give to people with his book F*ck Your Feelings 12:10
  • Neuroscience shows how 95% of your decisions are based on your feelings 13:00
  • Does your brain have competing systems that fight against each other 17:05
  • What’s the emotional bandwidth and how it affects your decision making 22:22
  • How the lobsters’ dominance hierarchy can teach you an important lesson about balancing your neurotransmitters and nervous system 30:56
  • What strategies can help you to get out of chronic stress and depression 32:37
  • The difference between optimizing states and traits 45:00
  • Are you dependent of supplements and limitless pills? 47:20
